Is this a fungal or mite infection?

Two of my guinea pigs have got rough patches of skin, their fur has come away from the affected area. It looks scabby/rough and in places its sore, probably where they have been scratching. Ive also bathed them in insecticide shampoo but this doesnt seem to have helped. I'm just confused how tell the two apart.
