Can someone explain the scene in Easy Rider where Jack Nicholson is killed?

Though i have watched this movie several times, i still do not understand the scene where Jack Nicholson is killed. Because it is night it is so dark and hard to see. How did Billy and Wyatt escape? Why weren't they killed? etc. thanks for your help
