Hey I'm a guy, and it's a typical situation in my opinion. The way you've described those events makes me think he does like you. If he smiled at you after turning down the other girl, he's probably got a crush on you. I don't want to get your hopes up if it's not true, but it is likely. I mean he could be seeking attention and just wanting you to like him more, but then he wouldn't have rejected the other girl(s). If he likes you and hasn't told you, he's reasonably shy, so does that fit with character? I mean if he's a really bold guy (which 'semi-emos' usually aren't) then it doesn't add up. But if he is shy, he probably does like you. I suggest talking to him a bit more, say hi and smile when you p him in the hall, and he'll pick up that you like him, if he hasn't already.
