Gun lubrication substitute?

What is the point of using an alternative method when the real thing is readily available and inexpensive? Unless you get caught out in the bush for weeks or something. Motor oil eventually turns greasy and can get gritty. WD-40 dries out but is good in a pinch after a rain storm. I just wouldn't put any substitute for a good gun oil on my prized possessions.
